EMPOWERING ACTORS TO BE THEIR Whole SELVES
THE ORIGINS OF
THE WholeHearted ACTOR
Hello, I am Clare!
I am a working actor and acting coach. In my twenty years in the industry, I've noticed how often the actor's wellness is overlooked and even discouraged in the pursuit of success. Our industry has a long-standing history of perpetuating a toxic culture, built on hustle, scarcity, and competition. As we pursue an acting career we consider wellness and rest as a luxury we cannot afford. Our commitment to the grind inevitably leads to burn out, and leaves us feeling creatively unfulfilled. From early on in our training, we are taught that sacrificing our health, relationships, and mental well being is the price we pay for a successful acting career. Being overworked and underpaid are how we pay our dues.
We are expected to accept that that is just they way it is, and be grateful - even when we are struggling.
For a long time I have wanted this industry to be different. This was my primary question:
How can we build a sustainable acting career – while also honoring our needs as a human being?
This is what inspired me to create The WholeHearted Actor - and build a little corner of the earth where actors can develop their craft, and foster a healthier, more compassionate relationship with their careers. The WholeHearted Actor provides studio space that offers high calibre acting training that prioritizes the person before the career. The WholeHearted Actor is a creative home for actors, a place where we choose community over competition.
I navigate vulnerability and the acting process with a trauma-informed lens, and I take great care in building a consent forward culture. I work with actors to help them find consistent and grounded performances while cultivating resilience. My hope is that actors are emboldened to show up fully and authentically and feel confident in naming their needs and boundaries.
The WholeHearted Actor is here to support actors who are committed to honing their craft, building a sustainable career, and granting themselves grace in an unforgiving industry.
Let’s build a healthy, joyful, and sustainable acting career---together.
